Nice Overview

Nice, France, is a near perfect travel destination for a short city break - it's the Queen of the Riviera; the capital city of the Côte d'Azur; a superb winter and summer holiday resort and, thanks to budget flight airlines, a cheap holiday destination that is extremely easy to get to.
Sitting proudly at the head of the Baie des Anges, Nice owes its fantastic climate to the circle of hills that protect it from grim northerly winds, including the fearsome mistral that can create havoc in less well protected holiday resorts to the west.
Nice has been home to famous artists like Matisse, giving the resort a touch of cultural class. It is also home to some of the world's leading galleries and museums. Food lovers will delight in the food market, the quaint cafes, and the huge selection of restaurants.
The French holiday resort is split in two by the Paillon, a river torrent that runs to the sea, often underground. To the west is the elegant modern city where most of the hotels can be found; to the east is the old city, with its narrow alleys and enticing shops, cafes and bars. The old town is also home to the attractive port and the castle hill.
Nice, France, is a Mediterranean city with more than a touch of Italy about it. Indeed the resort and the surrounding countryside were for centuries part of the Kingdom of Sardinia and became French for a short time under Napoleon. In 1814 Nice returned to Italian rule, and only in 1860 did the people vote to become part of France.
Many cheap flight airlines run holiday services from most UK airports, and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is one of the busiest in France. There's a six times daily train service from Paris on the excellent French rail network and a new Nice tram service has made getting around the city easier.
Nice is a superb travel base for other short break holidays to many top Riviera attractions including St Tropez; Cannes; the Principality of Monaco and a string of smaller exclusive resorts along the Mediterranean Cote d'Azur.
Inland, ski resorts are within an hour's drive and Italy is only a stone's throw away by car or train. If you're considering a hassle-free beach holiday with a touch of class, Nice France could be the perfect spot.
